Court Appearances
Physical Attendance Required
The law requires you appear in court on your case (a phone call is not an appearance):
  • If you were issued a citation, you have 20 days from the date of the citation to make an appearance.
  • If you have been released from jail, you must contact the court, in person, within 10 days to schedule a new court date.
  • You or your attorney may appear in person in open court, by mail, or you may deliver your plea in person to the court.
  • Anyone under 21 years of age, but over 17 years of age and charged with an alcohol offense must appear in person before the court. A parent or legal guardian is not required to appear in court.
  • Juveniles and minors must appear in open court before the judge and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Note:
The court will not have your citation immediately after you receive it.

Requesting a Continuance
If you need a continuance, you must submit a detailed written request to the court at least 24 hours prior to court date.

Acceptable Reasons to Request a Continuance
You may request a continuance for the following reasons:
  • The court date falls on a religious holy day where the tenets of your religious organization prohibit members from participating in secular activities such as court proceedings. (You must file an affidavit with the court stating this information.)
  • You feel it is necessary for justice in your case.
  • All parties are in agreement (you and the prosecutor).

The judge decides whether or not to grant the continuance. Failure to submit the request in writing may cause your request to be denied.
